Introduction to the LIBECCIO DMSS
Course Description
This course introduces the LIBECCIO Destination Management Support System — a web-based tourism intelligence platform built within the Interreg Euro-MED LIBECCIO project to support sustainable, evidence-based destination governance across eight Mediterranean territories.
The course is designed for three audiences: public governance actors and destination management organisations who need evidence for planning and policy; private-sector bodies and business support organisations who need market intelligence for operational decisions; and consultants, academics and researchers who use structured tourism data for analytical and advisory work. No prior technical knowledge is required.
By the end of this course, learners will have a solid conceptual foundation for working with the DMSS — understanding what it is, where its data comes from, who uses it and why evidence-based destination management matters. This foundation is the prerequisite for courses "How to Use the DMSS: Access, Navigation and Interaction" and "Deep Dive into the DMSS Dashboards", where learners will begin using the platform directly.
Learning Objectives
By completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Explain what the LIBECCIO project is, why it was created, and how it fits within the Interreg Euro-MED programme
- Describe the DMSS as a decision-support environment — its architecture, how data flows through it, and what Grafana provides as its visualisation layer
- Identify the six data source families that feed the platform and understand what each one contributes to the integrated picture
- Recognise the three main user groups and explain how each engages with the DMSS differently depending on their role and decision-making needs
- Articulate why evidence-based destination management matters, how dashboards transform complex data into actionable knowledge, and what responsible data interpretation requires
Course Contents
The course is organised into six sections:
- Section 1 — Course Overview and Learning Roadmap (~4 minutes)
- Section 2 — What is the LIBECCIO Project and the DMSS? (~11 minutes)
- Section 3 — Data Sources and the Multi-Source Integration Approach (~11 minutes)
- Section 4 — Who Uses the DMSS and For What Purpose? (~11 minutes)
- Section 5 — Evidence-Based Destination Management: Why Data Matters (~11 minutes)
- Section 6 — Assessment Questionnaire (~10 minutes)
Supplementary Reading
Each content section (2–5) is accompanied by a detailed reference presentation for deeper self-study, covering the same topics in greater analytical depth. These materials are available in the supplementary resources section of the course.
Prerequisites
None. This is an introductory course. Learners are not expected to have prior knowledge of the DMSS, Grafana, tourism data systems or the LIBECCIO project. A general interest in tourism governance, destination management or data-informed decision-making is sufficient preparation.
What Learners Will Be Able to Do After This Course
Learners who complete Course 1 will be ready to:
- Navigate Course 2 with confidence, as they will understand the conceptual purpose of every platform feature they encounter
- Engage meaningfully with DMSS dashboards, knowing where the data comes from and what its limitations are
- Communicate the rationale for evidence-based tourism governance to colleagues and stakeholders
- Identify which dashboard services are most relevant to their own professional role
Duration
Approximately 50 minutes of video content across five sections, plus 10 minutes for the assessment. Supplementary detailed reference presentations are available for learners who wish to go deeper into any topic.
